3D printer opening
3D printing similar to nature
Together with the Johann-Pachelbel-Realschule, the Bionicum presents a new and interactive exhibit
The new 3D printer in the Bionicum is a very special exhibit that produces and displays new creations every day. Fifth-graders from Nuremberg’s Johann-Pachelbel-Realschule will inaugurate the exhibit together with the Bionicum on December 8. Beforehand, they worked in small groups to create dioramas, whose inhabitants were then gradually created in the 3D printer.
3D printing is an additive manufacturing process in which material is applied layer by layer to produce a three-dimensional object. In nature, for example, it is used by field wasps that build their nests from wood fibers softened with their saliva.
Bionicum director Dr. Eva Gebauer will be joined by Dr. Thassilo Franke, biologist at the Munich Science Communication Lab. He has an unusual object with him – a colorful wasp nest! He will explain to the students as to how it was created and what it has to do with the 3D printer.
The event will focus on the connection to nature and the tips and tricks that we can learn for technology.
The Bionicum warmly invites you to the inauguration of the exhibit.
